My Modest Proposal Obesity rates in the United States are among the highest in the world. Around two thirds of the adults living here are either overweight or obese and around 200,000 deaths in the United States are cause from obesity and causes health problems including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. This is a major problem in our society to this day and continues to get worse and worse every year. My modest proposal would be to create a new tax called a “fat” tax that raises your regular taxes by a certain percentage, if your body fat percent is above the recommended, based on World Health Organization and National Institutes of Health recommendations.

The sports would become more competitive, with less fat people and more fit and sculpted individuals playing (except American sumo wrestling, which would become non-existent). Are there any other ways we could solve the obesity and overweight problems in the US that would work as well? We could certainly raise the taxes on unhealthy foods like the sin tax that puts a higher tax on harmful products in the United States, such as cigarettes and alcohol. This would perceptibly prevent the lower and some of the middle class citizens form buying some of the higher taxed foods but would not change the upper class form purchasing and eating the unhealthy foods. It also wouldn’t prevent people from just flat out eating too much food. Like sumo wrestlers, humans can gain pounds of fat by simply eating too much food/ lots of proteins and somewhat healthy foods. This is another down factor to raising taxes on unhealthy foods because its not only fatty and bad food that gets people obese and overweight, it is also caused from overeating. Adding a fat tax to everyone’s yearly taxes would change this country in various constructive ways. The United States as you know it today, would be a whole new country, with our obesity and overweight statistics changing from the highest in the world, to the lowest. Our country would be looked upon with greater respect than it gets
